MOUNT VERNON - A Vietnam soldier's pledge -- made and delayed, but never forgotten for 35 years -- finally was fulfilled yesterday in an emotional moment at a tiny rural cemetery in Rockcastle County.

"I made a promise," Richard Hines said softly, standing by David Chaney's grave, "and I'm here to keep that promise."

Interview with Lt Col Charles P Graham, Commander, 2d Squadron, 1st Cavalry, conducted by Capt Peter L Sawin on 29 June 1968. Lt Col Graham was our second commander in Vietnam and the first one to serve a full six months in the position. Some of his insights in mid-1968 were foretelling of what the future would hold for us.

COMBAT AFTER ACTION REPORT - B TROOP, 2d SQUADRON, 1ST CAVALRY, TASK FORCE SOUTH, PERIOD JULY 1969
